Ficción y compromiso ontológico

2014

In this paper I am concerned with a variant of Kripke´s abstractist theory of fiction, namely, the semantic theory according to which proper names and …

Boris “Ich bin drin” Becker (‘Boris I am in Becker’). Syntax, semantics and pragmatics of a special naming construction

2016

Constructions such as Germ. Boris “Ich bin drin” Becker (‘Boris I am in Becker’) follow a startling pattern. A quotation (“Ich bin drin”) is inserted in between two constituents of a complex personal-name construction (Boris Becker). The quotation relates to the person bearing this name. Therefore, the whole construction cannot be understood without massive contextual knowledge, i.e. knowing when, where, and why Boris Becker said so, and how this is relevant in the interpretation of the construction. In general, N “CP” N constructions such as Boris “Ich bin drin” Becker not only differ from canonical personal-name constructions such as Boris Becker in requiring the import of background know…

Ukrainian culture fansubbed: Challenges of amateur subtitling

2021

The research addresses the issues of rendering culture specific information in amateur subtitling from the Ukrainian into the English language. The fansubbing of proper names, culture-bound common nouns, formulaic sequences, sociolects and songs by the non-professional translators for whom English is a foreign language is the main focus of this study. Thus, the comparative analysis of the Ukrainian filmsChasing Two Hares(1961),Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors(1965) andPrayer for Hetman Mazepa(2001), and their English subtitles reveals the difficulties fansubbers may face, as well as discusses translations strategies and techniques employed. Moreover, the study delves into reasons underlying t…

Selective proper name anomia in a patient with asymmetric cortical degeneration

1998

All cases of selective anomic deficit for proper names described until now are a consequence of focal cerebral lesions. In the present paper, we report the case of a patient, AF, with a deficient access to proper names of persons and normal access to common names probably subsumed by a degenerative process of the left cerebral hemisphere. MRI evidenced an atrophy of the left temporal lobe and SPECT highlighted hypoperfusion of the left hemisphere. Neuropsychological examination documented a deficient production of proper names belonging to famous personalities both on visual presentation and verbal definition. Moreover, on verbal fluency tasks, AF was poor for the categories of famous peopl…

Closeness and distance through the agentive authorial voice

2020

Credibility is a function associated with promotional genres and persuasion, and a powerful marketing concept (Eisend, 2006; Ming, 2006) which provides trustworthiness about the quality of products or services offered by hotels (Suau-Jiménez, 2012a, 2019). It is partly attained through the hotel’s self-mentioning in websites. When this self-mentioning is agentive with action verbs, the main instantiation is the pronoun we, projecting closeness and assertiveness. However, this self-representation is also construed with depersonalized realizations like the hotel’s proper name, other nominalizations or even pronouns like it and they, which provide attenuating aspects and create a sense of dist…

Nazwa własna a nazwa pospolita – dylematy z pogranicza chrematonimii

2019

Are there individual concepts? Proper names and individual concepts in SI—Nets

1989

We discuss some aspects of the role played by descriptional knowledge in expressions denoting individual objects. In knowledge representation systems such as KL-ONE and KRYPTON which use semantic networks to express descriptional information, the problem is to establish whether the use of individual concepts in a network is justified. In the light of theoretical and applicational considerations, in the proposed solution only definite descriptions are considered as being characterizable by means of definitions. Vice versa, proper names, in the strict sense, will be treated as having no definitional dimension, and as such only appear in the assertional knowledge base. A description is given o…

Einführung von Diskursreferenten im Bilderbuch

2011

By analyzing 20 picture books that include both a textual narrative and pictures, three types of referent introduction were identified: introduction of referents by use of an indefinite noun phrase; introduction of referents by use of a definite noun phrase or a proper name; introduction of referents by use of a deictic construction. This shows that children are confronted with different strategies of referent introduction from early on. It is argued that the results of studies on the acquisition of the system of reference introduction could possibly be interpreted differently if one takes into account how the experience with literary texts influences children’s own narratives.

Searching the Traces of Middle Low German in Latvian Proper Names

2021

Searching the traces of Middle Low German in Latvian proper names The great impact of Middle Low German on the Latvian language during the 13 th –16 th centuries is a well-known and rather widely researched fact. However, the main focus of linguists’ attention has so far been on the apellative vocabulary. This article therefore aims to highlight the traces of Middle Low German in Latvian proper names – placenames and personal names (both first names and surnames) – during the time of their appearance and also nowadays (also touching upon the issue of onyms that have disappeared during previous centuries). The system of Latvian personal names (as the ancient Baltic two-stem personal names gr…
